Learn About Controlling Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can be terrifying. They leave you with a feeling of complete lack of control of your own body and this incredible fear sweeps over you. Whether you have never had an anxiety attack before or you’re a person who knows you are prone to them, there are some ways that you can start controlling panic attacks so that they don’t have such great effects on you.

As someone who hasn’t suffered an anxiety attack before, there are some things you should look into that will help you stay panic attack free. For people who wouldn’t normally suffer from panic attacks, medication can be a leading cause of why people get them. If you are on any medications at all, the best way to go about controlling panic attacks is to find out from your doctor if anxiety attacks are a symptom of any of the medicines you are on. Also make sure that your doctor knows everything you take because mixing medications may cause attacks.

Both people who do have a predisposition to anxiety attacks and people who don’t may find themselves suffering from them if they are going through withdrawal. Drug or alcohol abuse can have many negative effects on the body that people become dependent on, so when people decide to quit the withdrawal symptoms can lead to extreme stress, or anxiety attacks. To really be the person controlling panic attacks, don’t use drugs or abuse alcohol. If you already are and are trying to quit, seek the help of your doctor as they might have something to help the withdrawal symptoms.

Surprisingly, your attitude can also be a contributing factor to controlling panic attacks. Some people who have shown very passive attitudes are more likely to suffer from panic attacks and this is increased if it already runs in the family. The best way to keep this from causing you to have anxiety attacks is to assert yourself when you have an opinion about something. Even showing some backbone on very simple decisions such as what to watch or where to eat can greatly reduce the chances of passive behavior causing stress.

Perhaps the easiest way to start controlling panic attacks, especially if you have already suffered from them in the past, is to build up a tolerance of your current phobias. Extreme fear of something can cause you to have a panic attack and while avoiding it may seem like the answer it will actually only strengthen your fear. You should instead build yourself up to not being afraid anymore.

If you are afraid of spiders, start with a picture of one somewhere in your home. Once you can see it without feeling frightened, move on to videos or movies with spiders in them. Don’t jump into trying to deal with a spider in person; no one expects you to be able to work through this immediately. Work your way up at a level you feel comfortable with and you’ll find yourself rid of two problems: your fear and your panic attacks.
