The Fail-First Method of Addiction Treatment Will Be Abolished in Staten Island, Harbor Village Detox Expands Services to SI

(PRWEB) March 09, 2015

Staten Island has just approved a monumental bill, and is slated to be enacted in April of 2015, according to SI Live on Feb. 13th. The bill, which was sponsored by assemblyman Michael Cusick will equalize the playing field when it comes to patients suffering from substance use disorders getting the treatment that is recommended by their medical doctors, and treatment plans insurance companies want to pay for. Typically, insurance companies opt for lesser forms of addiction treatment, waiting for patients to fail first, and then cover the initial treatment recommended by medical professionals. Harbor Village Detox is an inpatient medical detox center specializing in medical detoxification. In light of Staten Island’s imminent change in the way the state handles insurance coverage, the drug and alcohol addiction treatment center is expanding its addiction treatment services to Staten Island.

A medical associate from Harbor Village Detox comments, “Insurance companies regularly hinder the recovery process of addiction patients- and it’s already a complicated road to recovery. We recommend treatment because it will save lives. Placing a heavily addicted patient into an outpatient program, when he needs 24/7 monitored inpatient treatment, is essentially inviting him to fail, where he may fatally relapse. Insurance companies and medical professionals need to be on the same page.”

The new bill will ensure medical professionals and insurance companies will assess patients’ needs on the same scale. The change in assessment will alter how insurance companies will assess patients, and subsequently fund addiction treatment programs.

Inpatient rehabilitation is the second stage of addiction treatment (proceeded by inpatient medical detox) that makes the most impactful difference in successful drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Inpatient rehabilitation therapy teaches recovering addicts how to assume healthy life management and coping strategies to abstain from substance use. However, inpatient rehabilitation is costly, and most private insurance opt to pay for the less effective outpatient therapy. To put things in perspective, inpatient rehabilitation is conducted in a continually monitored facility- restricting access from illicit addictive substances entirely, giving patients the necessary recovery time to kick the habit. Outpatient rehabilitation is intended to continue treatment after inpatient rehabilitation, and allows patients to return home to their environments of abuse, which almost always lead to continued substance abuse in first time attendees of drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Harbor Village Detox is committed to providing the apex of medical treatment to ensure the ultimate recovery of patients with substance use disorders. The drug and alcohol addiction treatment facility teaches patients the life skills they need to avoid the future regression of relapses, and find healthy, alternative methods to counteract feelings of depression, anger, anxiety, and other triggers precipitating drug and alcohol abuse.
