Advantage Testing Creates Awareness for the Dangers of ‘Bath Salts’

(PRWEB) September 08, 2012

Advantage Testing, a leading provider of workplace drug testing in Beaumont, Texas, recently decided to create awareness about the use of a fairly new synthetic drug that goes by the street name “Bath Salts.” In an increased effort to continue providing superior drug testing for illegal substances and drug-free workplace support, Advantage Testing offers testing for Bath Salts and explains what it is, the side effects and the legalities involved.

According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bath Salts are made from chemicals that are a synthetic derivative of cathinone, a central nervous system stimulant found naturally in the khat plant. Mephedrone and MDPV are two of the designer cathinones most commonly found in bath salts. Bath Salts are usually ingested by sniffing or snorting, but they can also be taken orally, smoked or injected.

People who abuse these substances have reported a number of side of affects on the mind, including agitation, insomnia, irritability, dizziness, depression, paranoia, delusions, suicidal thoughts, seizures, and panic attacks. Users have also reported an impaired perception of reality, reduced motor control, and decreased ability to think clearly. Bath Salts also cause dangerous physical side effects, causing rapid heart rate (which may lead to heart attacks and strokes), chest pains, nosebleeds, sweating, nausea and vomiting.

“Bath Salts are a deadly drug that has an innocuous name and can mislead individuals into trying this type of drug that attacks the central nervous system and causes delusions and hallucinations,” said Mike Vigil, a retired Chief of International Operations for the DEA.

As of October 2011, three synthetic stimulants that are used to make bath salts, Mephedrone, MDPV and Methylone were classified as controlled substances. Except as authorized by law, possessing and selling these chemicals, or the products that contain them, is illegal in the United States.
